Community Service

Individuals who have court-mandated community service hours to perform may apply to volunteer with Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

Individuals who meet the basic criteria and agree to comply with the procedures below may begin by completing a Volunteer Application. Once your volunteer application is processed by volunteer services staff, we will contact you to arrange an interview and assist you with your volunteer placement and documentation required by the court.

Procedures

1. The Volunteer Program will interview all prospective community service volunteers and determine eligibility on an individual basis. Some offenses will automatically disqualify community service volunteers from completing their hours with Lifelong, including violent crimes, weapons charges or other serious felonies. The Volunteer Program will contact the potential community service volunteer’s probation officer to verify all information. Lifelong retains the sole authority to accept or reject a community service volunteer – but not in a capricious or discriminatory manner.

2. Community service volunteers will not serve in client contact positions or positions with access to money, except in special circumstances to be determined by Lifelong’s Volunteer Program. The nature of a community service volunteer’s crime and his/her community service status itself is strictly confidential. Information about community service volunteers is provided to staff on a need-to-know basis. Program leads have the authority to terminate community service volunteers for cause and should contact the Volunteer Program prior to doing so.

3. The Volunteer Program is responsible for maintaining paperwork from the courts, writing letters to the proper authority upon completion of the required hours and maintaining any appropriate contact with probation officers. Individuals are responsible for tracking hours worked and turning those into the Volunteer Program.

4. Community service volunteers with more than 35 hours to serve must fill out all regular Lifelong paperwork and attend a general volunteer orientation training. Those volunteers with fewer than 35 hours need not attend a general training, but will be required to fill out all volunteer paperwork. Volunteers may not be accepted if they have too few hours to perform and/or there is no placement for them within the agency. Community service volunteers are accepted based on the nature of their offenses, the number of the hours they must complete and the current program needs within the agency.

5. Community service volunteers are allowed two unexcused absences during the course of their service with Lifelong AIDS Alliance. If volunteers exceed two unexcused absences, they will be terminated. All community service volunteers will comply with confidentiality guidelines regarding the privacy rights of all direct or indirect participants of Lifelong. Community service volunteers will be expected to work within volunteer conduct guidelines as presented during general volunteer orientation.
