DEFINITION:
Chicken Soup Brigade –Lifelong’s Food Program (CSB) provides homemade frozen meals, groceries, and nutrition counseling to people living with HIV/AIDS and other disabling illnesses. The primary responsibility of the Nutrition Assistant is to provide support to our dietetic staff by assisting with nutrition screening and appointment setting. All other duties are flexible and will attempt to be sensitive to the learning needs of the Nutrition Assistant. This position meets the needs for work-study or unpaid field experience and reports to the Nutrition Services Manager. Requires a commitment of 10-20 hours each week.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conduct telephone nutrition screens with CSB clients in 3-6 month intervals.
2. Track nutrition screen and other relevant information using MS Excel.
3. Enter paper charts into electronic medical record software program.
4. Assist in data entry of client funding documentation.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist with production of educational materials for ethnically diverse communities, accounting for varied literacy levels.
2. Coordinate and/or participate in meal and grocery evaluations.
3. Assist with nutrition education classes and congregate meals.
4. Assist with other CSB duties as needed by the dietitians and other CSB staff if time permits.
5. If desired, shadow Registered Dietitians during one-on-one client appointments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Nutrition Sciences student highly preferred. Will except graduate or undergraduate nutrition students with adequate related work experience or other advanced degree students with adequate nutrition experience.
2. Experience and comfort with computers. Ability to use MS Excel a must.
3. Excellent organizational skills.
4. Experience with medical charting desired.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with staff, volunteers, and clients of varying ethnic backgrounds, education, and literacy levels.
6. Self motivated and ability to work independently.
7. Comfortable working with people of varying socio-economic backgrounds and sexual orientation, including clients with mental health and substance abuse issues.
