Community and Education

Community and Education Volunteers help spread information about HIV/AIDS and Lifelong’s services to make a difference in the fight against AIDS.

Community Outreach Volunteers
Spread Lifelong’s name and solicit additional volunteers by distributing information at various tabling events throughout the year.

Education Outreach Volunteers
Provide safer sex information to community members, bars, bathhouses, streets, parks and community events. Volunteers must be comfortable working in social and sexually-charged environments and discussing sexual information. Bar outreach volunteers conduct educational surveys about local HIV vaccine trials. Trainings are provided for both kinds of outreach. Anyone over 21 is eligible for bar out reach; gay /bi men are particularly needed for bathhouse outreach.

Education Events
Assist the education department with the production of education events, such as workshops, dances and forums.

MPowerment Community Advisory Board
Lifelong AIDS Alliance is please to announce the formation of a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to support its MPowerment youth program. MPowerment was established in 2001 to empower young gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning men, ages 16 to 22, to avoid unsafe sexual activity. The CAB consists of a diverse group of men and women from varying professions who share this hope.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Community Outreach Volunteer
Commitment: 2-3 hours per week for at least 3 months
Report to: Volunteer Coordinator or other Departmental Staff
Basic Function: Assist in recruiting Lifelong AIDS Alliance volunteers by posting and distributing flyers and other materials around King County
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Keep people in King County informed about the needs of our clients living with HIV/AIDS and about volunteer opportunities at Lifelong AIDS Alliance
• Work independently or in groups to distribute flyers and other Lifelong AIDS Alliance promotional materials to local venues including stores, schools, churches and apartment buildings
• Communicate regularly with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding current distribution sites and material effectiveness
• Report volunteer hours to Volunteer Coordinator weekly
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Must demonstrate good organizational skills
• Must be reliable and able to work independently
• Must be willing to maintain good communication with the Volunteer Coordinator
• Must be familiar with Lifelong AIDS Alliance facts and mission statement
• Must be able to provide own transportation to distribution site
• Comfortable working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations and racial diversity

Education Outreach Volunteer
Commitment: 10 hours per month, for at least 6 months, weekends and evenings
Report to: Outreach Coordinator
Basic Function: Provide safer sex education targeted to community members, bars, bathhouses, streets, parks and community events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform outreach in bars, bathhouses, streets, parks, community events and other venues as defined by the Community Outreach Specialist
• Participate in community safer sex events and programs
• Participate in monthly team meetings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• In-depth HIV/AIDS prevention knowledge
• Comfort with a high level of public visibility
• Knowledge of and comfort with gay and bisexual identification
• Personal awareness and emotional maturity
• Strong and effective communication skills involving active listening
• Ability to provide emotional support to community members and team members in a compassionate, empathetic manner
• Comfortable working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations and racial diversity

Education Event Volunteer
Commitment: 2-4 hours shifts. Shift times and commitment depends on the event. Generally events have a one-time commitment.
Report to: Outreach Coordinator or other Education Department Staff
Basic Function: Assist staff and other program participants in producing education-related special events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Setting up events
• Work independently or in groups to distribute flyers and other Lifelong AIDS Alliance promotional materials to local venues including: stores, schools, churches, apartment buildings, etc.
• Communicate regularly with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding current distribution sites and material effectiveness
• Report volunteer hours to Volunteer Coordinator weekly

Jars in Bars Fundraising Program
In 1987 a dedicated Lifelong AIDS Alliance volunteer started the"Jars in Bars program. He saw a need and knew he could make a difference in his community. So can you! Help us maintain this grassroots fundraising program by distributing coin jars in Capitol Hill businesses. The program has expanded beyond bars to include many restaurants, retailers, and other businesses in our community. This is a great opportunity for volunteers who are interested in community activism or fundraising!

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Volunteers in pairs will travel to participating businesses to pick up cash donations from Lifelong donation containers.
• Assist staff in recruiting new businesses to host Lifelong donation containers.
• Under supervision of staff, count and tally donations.
• Assist staff with creative design of donation containers.
• Assist in event promotion including: posting flyers, materials distribution, and phone calls.
• Other duties as assigned.
Volunteer shifts are two Thursday evenings a month from 4:00pm - 7:00pm with a volunteer commitment of three months.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Volunteers must be age 18 and older. (obviously only volunteers 21+ will enter bars.)
• Excellent communication skills and ability to understand and follow directions.
• Comfortable asking for donations; tact and diplomacy on the phone and in person.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Must be reliable.
• Comfortable working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and racial diversity.
• Ability to walk distances and/or have access to a car.
• Comfortable counting and tallying cash donations.
